Barth on God's communication options

God may speak to us through Russian communism or a flute concerto, a blossoming shrub or a dead dog. We shall do well to listen to Him if He really does so.

-Karl Barth, CD I/1 (trans. Thompson; Edinburgh: 1936), 60.

Barth goes on to point out that this divine freedom doesn't undermine the church's obligation to proclamation through preaching and sacraments.

I would have pointed this out in the post itself in order to avoid MPJ's prohibition on pure-quote posts, but I felt it might dilute the impact of this wonderful Barth-ism.

Ben Myers is also thinking about this quote.
